The wind chill where Joel's property is located: -37....yes, that "-" is a negative.

I actually ended up with a snow day today! I was quite proud of myself after I drove all the way to Monument, and then they said I could go back home if I wanted to because we wouldn't be too busy with the bad weather. The rest of the week should be "warmer"... balmy 40 degrees this weekend, which is a temperature I never thought I'd be so excited to see.

I'm not quite sure how much snow we have in our yard...but I'm going to guess 4" or so? Hurley had a great time romping through the neighborhood on our walk a little bit ago. Going for a quick lap around the block isn't very easy here during the winter: long johns, fleece pants, ski pants, long sleeves, sweatshirt, fleece, ski jacket, hat, scarf, and gloves and then we can head out of the garage!

Joel has been going full force since Saturday night when the storm started. He is now managing a single property for snow removal- this property is very picky and as Joel says, "they expect you to be out there catching the snow in buckets before it hits the ground," so he hasn't been home much! Well, enough about the weather right now...as far as what else has been going on since we blogged, we were able to attend a Broncos game! My aunt and uncle had tickets from a friend, so we got to watch the Broncos get smeared by San Diego...but it was a lot of fun!

We spent our first Thanksgiving away from home, which was sad, but we were able to head to Denver to spent it with my aunt and uncle and some of their friends. The day after Thanksgiving, we headed up to Loveland for a day of skiing. Most of the resorts weren't fully open yet, so we headed to this sport that is not too far from Denver. We had a great time and it is fun to think we can just run up and ski when we have an afternoon or day open.

Not much else to report...we had our Sunday School Christmas party this past Saturday, and Joel won the prize for ugliest Christmas sweater- I was so proud! We also went up to the Pike National Forest to cut a Christmas tree!

Only 209 hours until we're back in the SOUTH for Biz's wedding and family Christmases!

In case you read the last post in an e-mail, make sure you go to http://joelandwhit.blogspot.com/ so you can see the video.

Happy December!

Life has been chugging along pretty well here recently...I hope to post updates, etc. soon, but for now I thought I'd share a little Christmas spirit from Hurley:

NOTE: If you're reading this in an e-mail, make sure to go to THIS PAGE so you can see the video!

I'll probably have plenty of options to post over the next week, as Joel is gearing up for snow that is coming in tonight and a couple of days of single-digit temperatures....yikes, when can I go back South!?

Sorry that we've been out of the blogosphere again for awhile. Last weekend, John Payne came out to visit (for the 2nd time!) and we had a great time. This visit was just after the big snow, so there were still some remnants on the ground, and unfortunately, Joel was roped into "ice checks" the night John got into town...2 a.m. though, so it didn't mess up much besides sleep.

We think Hurley liked John.

We tried Saturday and Sunday to take the train up Pike's Peak, and thankfully called first- due to the snow, the train wasn't going all the way to the top, and we weren't too keen on going partially up America's Mountain. Saturday, we headed to Cripple Creek and struck it rich at the roulette table, and that evening (Halloween), we headed to the Golden Bee for pub food and sing-alongs. Joel and JP took part in a really really large beer:
The "Yard."
A view on the way back from Cripple Creek.

We went to Garden of the Gods on Sunday, and then to our friends the Smith's to eat. All in all, it was a great weekend!

This past week was pretty uneventful, except that Hurley can no longer reproduce. I took her with me to the clinic on Friday and spayed her. I think she was really confused that I kept poking her with needles and then my face was the last one she saw before being cut open. It didn't make it any better that we got home and Joel kept telling her, "Whit cut you open, Hurley- it wasn't me." Needless to say, I felt pretty guilty seeing her all mopey, so we went to PetsMart and got her a couple of toys to keep her occupied. One is a Kong (rubber bone that you can stick treats in...or in her case, liver flavored doggie squeeze cheese), and the 2nd was a 24" rawhide. This may have been the best $9 we've spent since we've had Hurley.
I'd take another picture today, but it looks about the same as it did the day we bought it.

I'm ready to begin my hibernation.

We have a couple of inches piling up in the yard! The snow started sometime this afternoon, but is currently the perfect snowball consistency. Poor Hurley is outnumbered and doesn't have thumbs, so she was the recipient of most of the icy throws.

Joel is on standby waiting to head out on snow duty, and we have another storm headed our way towards the middle of the week. Actually, the upcoming storm is the only one I've heard them refer to as a "storm," so I'm not quite sure what all of this other stuff has been!

Things have been relatively busy around here, with Joel's work and my new schedule split between two clinics, but we're enjoying it! We were able to make a quick trip to Denver last weekend to see my aunt and uncle, and headed up to Estes Park with them on Sunday afternoon. Estes Park is a small town in the mountains, home to lots and lots of elk that roam the streets, and home to the Stanley Hotel (Stephen King's inspiration for The Shining).

Red rum, red rum.

It was a beautiful day and we had a lot of fun. We didn't see many elk until we were heading out of town and ended up in the middle of a herd!

Yes, Joel actually videoed this:

On another note, we had an interesting Tuesday. We've had an oil leak in the Outback that has gotten progressively worse, so we dropped it off at the mechanic shop on Monday evening. On Tuesday, the place calls Joel to inform him that our car was broken into overnight...lovely, huh? Someone thought it would be really worth it to try to steal a one-disk aftermarket nothing special CD player. They didn't manage to get away with it, but busted a window and messed up the dash in the process. Oh well! Just making more memories!

Ice and sleep

Well, we're finally recovering from an icy weekend! I don't even want to try to add up the small number of hours of sleep Joel got From Thursday night through Monday. Each night, he had to go out for "ice checks" around 2 a.m. and usually didn't come back home for hours. If he was at home, he was sleeping, so Hurley and I made the best of our snow days and went down to the park around the corner and played in the ice. She absolutely loves it! I don't know if ice smells different, or holds odors, but she barely took her nose off the ground while we were down there:

I can't wait to see what she does with a real snow. This weekend's weather was more of an ice storm, which is abnormal for Colorado Springs. Black ice was all over the city on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning, complete with a 60 car pile-up on the interstate that Joel's boss barely missed (thankfully, no one was seriously injured).

The worst part about all of this...it is only October! I have no idea how I'm going to make it when winter really hits.

Pull out your favorite holiday movies...

because it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas here in Colorado Springs!

After a 70 degree day yesterday, we've been watching snow fall tonight, and we're anticipating highs of 50s tomorrow before the big chill of Saturday...a high of 31 is predicted- what a wierd place!

Sorry for the lack of updates...but is is all for good reasons! I've been working more than expected in Falcon, as one of the other vets was out with the flu last week, and as of a week from next Monday, I'll be working in Monument as well!!! I'll be there Mondays and Tuesdays, giving me a pretty full week with my Wednesdays and Thursdays (half days) and Fridays at my first job- God has been good and certainly taught me patience over this summer!

Speaking of summer, I feel like we never quite had one, and now I'm pretty sure we skipped fall and sped right into winter. However, we did get to enjoy some more fall foliage Sunday afternoon! We headed up to a trail we'd heard about near Cripple Creek and hiked around a bit. There was already snow in places in this area, and we found out very quickly that Hurley LOVES the snow!

This is Hurley tonight in our backyard with the snow...

Not a part-albino Rudolph.

Our yard and Joel's snow vehicle:

Pike's Peak from our neighborhood earlier in the week...I can't wait to see it tomorrow!

Back to our hike this weekend...we were blessed with some beautiful views of the last of the fall color before the remainder of the aspen leaves are blown away:

The Beast

This is one of my biggest fears...

Police spot mountain lion in east Colorado Springs

THE GAZETTE

Two Colorado Springs police officers spotted a mountain lion darting through a shopping center and into an apartment complex early today.

According to police, officers were patrolling in east Colorado Springs near the Fireside Apartments, 610 N. Murray Blvd. about 4 a.m. They saw a large mountain lion run into apartment complex courtyard and disappear. Officers called the Division of Wildlife, but the mountain lion was gone by the time members of the department arrived.

Warmth

It didn't take Hurley long to figure out where she'll be napping this winter...

Sewage and Snow

This morning, I took Hurley for a walk and since we were headed to the east, I didn't see the mountains until we were headed back home and I turned a corner to see THIS:

Yes, folks, that is snow. And no, you don't have to check your calendars, it is still officially summer.

A snow-topped mountain viewed through the changing leaves (hard to see).
More on the snow in a few minutes, a lot has happened over the past few days to talk about!

Joel and I drove up to Denver Thursday evening to pick up the Butlers from the airport for their visit! On Friday, Joel and I both had to work, so we left them with my aunt and uncle's Garmin, Joel's car, and a list of local attractions. On the way home from work, I called Joel to see if he'd heard how their day was, and was informed that they had had their own memory-making experience. The Butlers visited the Garden of the Gods Friday morning, and then decided to drive up Pikes Peak. Unfortunately, Joel's car wasn't as excited about the trip and died just above treeline. One and a half hours of prayer and a couple of park rangers later, the car started up on its own and they were able to make their way back down to civilization. We thought our adventures were over, but Saturday morning I walked into the basement laundry room to fill Hurley's food bowl, only to step back with a soggy sock: sewage. Human wastewater had backed into our basement from the pipes and filled the laundry room floor as well as seeped into the carpet downstairs. I'll spare you a photograph with this story! The plumber came to fix this while we continued our sightseeing tour by visiting Royal Gorge, but our landlord didn't feel like it was necessary to clean any of it up until today, and we sure as heck weren't touching it! So, we've been living on an upstairs-only basis since Saturday. The landlord is here now and thankfully the smell of Clorox is wafting up the stairs instead of the odor we've been greeted with so far.

The Royal Gorge was beautiful once again, and we were blessed with perfect weather. Some photos from our trip:

Rafters on the Arkansas River in the gorge.

Views of the Royal Gorge Bridge and Tram from the bottom of the gorge.

On Saturday night, we tried out a restaurant at The Broadmoor that I'd seen in a Colorado Springs book and that we'd heard about from some friends. The place is called The Golden Bee, and it is a little (literally...it seats fewer than 70 people) English-type pub on the grounds of the 5-star Broadmoor hotel. After 8:30, it becomes a piano-playing, sing-a-long, 64 oz ale sort of place complete with songbooks! We had a lot of fun and it was certainly worth the hour wait.

Sunday morning, we went to the early service and then headed home to change for a hike at the Crags.

The aspens have started to turn!

Fiascos aside, we had a great visit! I drove the Butlers up to Denver Sunday night so we could head to DIA early Monday morning. It rained the whole way to the airport, but it was just a taste of what the weather would be the rest of the day! I met a friend from vet school (who now lives in Denver) for breakfast after I dropped the Butlers off, and when we walked back out of Mimi's Cafe we looked at each other in disbelief...SNOW!!! At this point, there was a "wintry mix" falling in Lone Tree, CO where we were (south Denver). Here were two Southern girls living in Colorado watching snow in September!

I headed back to my aunt and uncle's to finish some laundry (since I didn't have great access to our laundry room!), and then headed south to Colorado Springs. Little did I know that I'd be passing through a winter wonderland on my way. This link shows some pictures of Castle Rock, Monument, and northern Colorado Springs and gives you a hint of what I saw along I-25 heading south. I wish I'd had my camera on me, but driving in my first snow as a Colorado resident probably wouldn't have been the best time to snap a photo. http://www.gazette.com/sections/article/gallery/?pic=1&id=62433 I wish I'd seen the two fellas in this photo along the way, but the snow was beautiful! Make sure you scroll through the other pictures to get the full effect.

The weather in Colorado Springs was about the same as it had been in Lone Tree...a wintry mix, but as you can see in the photo above from my walk this morning, we certainly had some snow stick in the west side of town! I'm just not sure how I'm going to survive this winter. I'm getting ready to start compiling Joel's emergency box for work. His boss said he has to keep rations in his truck when snow season starts because a guy a few years ago got stuck on the side of the road for 15 hours followed by a 15 hour stint at a gas station. Yikes!
